United Nations in Papua New Guinea

ORGANIZATION

The United Nations (UN) in Papua New Guinea is represented by twenty UN Agencies, Funds, and Programmes and supports the Government of Papua New Guinea in pursuing the national development agenda, including the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The UN System in Papua New Guinea has worked extensively with the Government to localize the SDGs and integrate them into the national development framework. With 85 percent of the country’s population living in rural areas with underdeveloped infrastructure, and approximately 30 percent of the population not accessing any form of media, such inaccessibility to people also limits data availability, particularly disaggregated data. As identification of the most disadvantaged is key to implementing the SDGs, the UN Communication Group, made up of UN Communication Specialists in Papua New Guinea, has undertaken a project to collect disaggregated data by using an innovative SMS platform.

OBJECTIVE

The goal is to visualize data sets related the SDGs indicators gathered from over 8,000 SMS survey participants across 22 provinces in Papua New Guinea. Raw data sets in excel format need to be disaggregated per province, age group, and gender, and to be visualised in forms of bar and ring charts, polar area diagrams, and proportional symbol maps etc, where appropriate.

The visualized data sets will be shared with the network of development practitioners including the government, academia, development partners, NGOs, private sector, and media through the recently launched PNG Data 4 Development Network through the data-sharing web-platform. They will be also shared to the wider open public through local media as well as NGOs and faith-based organizations through creation and distribution of the SDGs toolkit.

PROJECT

The project aims at creating a set of visualized data for web and print use. Disaggregation of the data is vital to make the development planning more evidence-based. For the web-usage, an interactive format is recommended. User-friendly data visualization needs to be thought through and adapted. Selected visualization will be:

  • Featured on the PNG Data4Development Network blog
  • Featured on the UN in PNG Website and Facebook
  • Featured on the UN Development Operations Coordination Office’s Website
  • Featured through local media programs
  • Featured on the SDGs toolkit (print)

DATA

Data is collected on 35 areas of SDGs related indicators as well as the overall perception on the SDGs. Each data contains information on the survey answer, province, gender, and age.
